plant properties

Contraindications:
Do not use them during pregnancy as they can stimulate the uterus. It is not advisable to use the plant continuously for long periods of time if no treatment is to be done. Its composition includes compounds such as bufadienolides which are cardiac glycosides, so patients who have suffered from heart disease should consult a doctor. Clinical research carried out on kalanchoe indicates that there may be toxicity if the plant is abused and indicates that up to doses of 5 grams of plant per kilo of weight there is no toxicity (this would be about 350 grams of leaf for a person weighing 70 kilos, which is a dose four to ten times higher than recommended). The mental attitude of the patient is very important when doing the treatment, each one according to his or her aptitude, but one must always be aware that we are using a living being, which has a physical part but also a subtle energy that we do not see. This living being, the plant, has the virtue of curing us and therefore it is good that there is respect and awareness of this reality. In Latin America, for example, traditional medicine takes these aspects into account. Also related to this, our attitude towards illnesses is important, which should be as positive as possible, since we must try to take advantage of adversity to learn.

The three plants we will discuss here are within this group and are as follows:

Kalanchoe daigremontiana (Bryophyllum daigremontianum)

It has numerous shoots or new plants on the edges of the leaves. The leaves have elongated spots on the underside. It is known as: Arantes, Mother of thousands, Kalanchoe mexicana.

Kalanchoe pinnata (Bryophyllum pinnatum)

Also called "Goethe's Plant" since it was studied by the German poet and botanist. Other names it receives in Latin America: Witch, Witch's Herb, Prodigiosa, Leaf of the Air, Always Living, Colombian, Ojaransín, Hojerilla.

Kalanchoe gaston-bonniers (Bryophyllum gastonis-bonnieri)

The scientific name comes from the French botanist Gaston Bonnier. This plant has larger leaves than the previous species. It is called: Ojaransín, Hojerilla, Oreja de burro.
It should be noted that popular names are sometimes applied to one or more species and vary from country to country.

Its action can extend beyond the points mentioned above, since it heals cellular damage in many organs of the body.

The part used is mainly the leaves, which have a tart taste. They can be taken externally or internally depending on what we want to treat.

Medicinal use

These kalanchoes are plants that act globally within the body and therefore have a broad spectrum of action. In traditional medicine, especially in Latin America, Asia and Africa, they are used to treat the following diseases and ailments:

  • Injuries and diseases related to cell damage, such as cancer.
  • Deep and gangrenous wounds
  • Infections, burns
  • Tumors, abscesses and floroncos
  • Rheumatism
  • Inflammation
  • Hypertension
  • Kidney stones
  • Diarrhea
  • Psychological illnesses: schizophrenia, panic attacks and fears.

kalanchoes They are tropical plants and therefore the following requirements must be taken into account:

  • Exhibition: They adapt to sun and shade, outdoors and indoors. However, they do not tolerate frost and in winter they must be protected if there is a risk of frost. They want light. If they are tall, they must be protected from the wind as it can break them.
  • Ground: better a light, non-clayey soil. Example: a mixture of sand and peat.
  • Irrigation: water regularly but make sure that the water does not stagnate as there is a risk of root rot. They withstand drought, especially Kalanchoe Daigremontiana, but they stop growth.
  • Plagues and diseases: we don't know. They are resistant plants.
  • Reproduction: The shoots that grow on the leaves take root very easily. By K. pinnata and K. Gaston generally has to have leaves placed on peat to encourage the appearance of shoots on the edges of the leaves.
  • Harvest: We will cut the leaves from the bottom, that is, the oldest ones first.

In order to have enough plants to take for a few months in case of cancer treatment, we must have plants that we will have to have prepared by reproducing them from the godchildren. We must start reproducing as soon as we have a plant. It is good to always have them ready in case we can help someone when they need them.

If we have a lot of production at any given time, we can dry the leaves and then cut them into pieces and save them to make infusions. Drying requires heat since the leaves carry a lot of water, but not direct sunlight. We can also freeze the leaves, but in this case they should be taken out of the freezer shortly before consuming them, since they lose their texture when frozen and cannot be preserved once they are out of the freezer.

CONSIDER: The Kalanchoe daigremontiana It is classified as an invasive plant in some countries and therefore, it is recommended to take this fact into account to avoid its excessive spread.
